WHAT IS THE EXPLORING PROGRAM?

Exploring is a division of the Learning for Life organization under the leadership of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women, ages fourteen through twenty. Its purpose is to bring character building, citizenship training, and fitness programs to the youth of America

WHAT MAKES THE FDNY FIRE AND EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES EXPLORING PROGRAM UNIQUE?

In addition to the basic objectives of the Greater Council of New York Learning for Life, the FDNY Exploring Program seeks to help young men and women :

  • Gain insight into FDNY careers and develop a road map to their futures

  • Provide hands-on training in Firefighting and Emergency Medical Services

  • Develop the tools necessary for a successful school-tocareer and school to-higher-education transition

  • Develop potential contacts that may broaden students employment options at FDNY

IF I BECOME AN FDNY EXPLORER WHAT CAN I EXPECT OF THE PROGRAM?

You will attend weekly Exploring Post Meetings where you will receive training in various areas of Firefighting and Emergency Medical Services. You will attend program-wide Training Days at both the New York City Fire Academy on Randall Island and the New York City EMS Academy on Fort Totten in Bayside, Queens. You will participate in local and regional Exploring Competitions and you will participate in a variety of community service projects.

WILL I EARN ANY CERTIFICATIONS AS AN FDNY EXPLORER?

Our Explorers have the opportunity to earn their certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS). In addition, as an Explorer you may have the opportunity to participate in 24 hours of HazMat Operations Level Training

DOES BEING AN FDNY EXPLORER QUALIFY ME FOR ANY OTHER FDNY YOUTH PROGRAMS?

Yes, FDNY Explorers in good standing who meet all other age and academic eligibility requirements have the opportunity to participate in our Youth EMS Academy Program where you can earn your New York State Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT – B) Certification.

HOW DO I QUALIFY TO BECOME AN FDNY EXPLORER?

You must be between 14 and 21 years of age. You must show proof of enrollment in High School, High School Equivalency (HSE) Program, or College. If you are enrolled in high school, you must maintain a minimum of 70% average in all of your classes. You must be able to attend a monthly meeting.
