EMT CAREERS

An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) provides basic life support (BLS) in a pre-hospital care setting to individuals during medical emergencies. Candidates must possess a valid New York State EMT Basic Certification. For certification course information, visit the Regional Emergency Medical Services Council (REMSCO) website (www.nycremsco.org).

PARAMEDIC CAREERS

A Paramedic provides advanced life support (ALS) in a pre-hospital care setting to individuals during medical emergencies. Paramedics have more advanced training, can perform invasive procedures and give medications under the supervision of a physician.
Candidates must possess a valid New York State Paramedic Certification and a New York City Regional Emergency Medical Advisory Committee (REMAC) Certification.

Hiring Requirements

To be appointed as an FDNY EMT or Paramedic, you must:

  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age

  • Have a driver‘s license that is valid in the State of New York

  • Successfully complete a physical agility test, psychological testingcomprehensive background

  • Possess a high school diploma or its equivalent

EMT  and Paramedic Exams

    • Qualified EMTs and Paramedics should file for Civil Service status during open filing periods.
    • Civil Service candidates receive preferred status in hiring.
    • Formal announcements for open competitive Civil Service EMT and Paramedic exams are posted here: “The Chief Leader” newspaper; The New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services website (www.nyc.gov/dcas); and The New York City Fire Department’s official website  (www.nyc.gov/fdny).

EMT and Paramedic Certification

  • Information about the NYC Regional Emergency Medical Advisory Committee (REMAC) Certification can be found at the Regional Emergency Medical Services Council (REMSCO) website (www.nycremsco.org).
  • Reciprocity of out-of-state certifications may be requested by contacting the New York State Department of Health at 518-402-0996.
  • Applicants for initial certification or recertification must have any misdemeanor or felony conviction reviewed by the New York State Department of Health prior to application. Call 212-417-4455.
